Foreign stocks are doing quite a bit better than U.S. stocks. If you just own foreign stocks, you are probably doing OK. Stock Market: Hidden Weakness

In fact the vast majority of stocks, I think are down on the year. If you look at the Dow, you are talking about 30 stocks, but if you look at the Russell 2000 Index, obviously you have 2000 stocks there and a lot of those stocks are down quite a bit this year, some of them are down more than 10 percent. 

So, just looking at the broad averages does not give you a real picture of what is going on in the stock market because I think most people I would guess, their portfolios are down on the year.

I have never seen a situation where politicians and bankers would publicly admit how much they want to create inflation. See, they normally want inflation but normally they are not honest about it. They lie about it, they don`t even like to use the word inflation. They say, monetary stimulus, we need a demand boost or they have some kind of code word for inflation, I mean, Quantitative Easing, that is an euphemism. The government wants inflation but they call it quantitative easing.

But this is the first time that you really see politicians and more importantly central bankers, the people who are theoretically been entrusted to safeguard the purchasing power of our money, these guys are now saying that we need more inflation.

Gold Prices Are Not Responding To Inflation

The fundamentals for gold appear to be getting better with inflation numbers getting worse in japan, people talking about inflation being too low in Europe and that they need to create more inflation, more of the inflation numbers picking up here.

All of these drum beats get louder and louder for inflation, yet the price of gold is not responding. Maybe they are still talking about, "Well, I guess inflation is good, I suppose there is no real reason to buy gold." Maybe there`s a lot of confidence out there that the central bankers can can keep inflation contained. They were not able to contain the problems in the mortgage market but maybe investors have a little bit more confidence that they can contain inflation.

And when they are talking about that they want higher inflation they are just going to tweak it up a notch. They are going to move it from 1.50% to 1.80% or 2.00% or whatever. In the Eurozone its still around 1.00% officially, so maybe they think they have a little bit more room to crank it up a little bit there and that somehow none of this is going to be bullish for the price of gold.

The irony of all this talk about the strong euro is the Euro (EUR) is not strong, the dollar (USD) is weak. U.S. Dollar Weakness: 5 Year Lows Against The GBP

The biggest story of the day that very few people in the financial world seem to be discussing, noticing or even caring about is the weakness in the U.S. Dollar. Nobody has been forecasting a weak dollar other than me. None of the people who routinely show off on the financial networks have been bearish on the dollar, in fact they have been universally bullish.

Why are so many people bullish on the dollar?

Because they believe the U.S. economy is strengthening and they believe that the Federal Reserve will be tightening and they believe therefore that these are bullish for the dollar. They also believe that the U.S. economy is in better shape than the rest of the world because we stimulated it and they did not, or they did not stimulate enough or they practiced austerity and so we are getting the benefits of all the things the Federal Reserve did and other countries have not done that yet, they are going to do that, they will learn from us. So they are going to print more money and so we are going to have a tighter monetary policy.

All this as I have been saying for years is a complete nonsense. And today the dollar is at a new 5 year low against the pound sterling.

What Is Going To Happen To GDP If The Fed Withdraws The Stimulus

Think about this. If the U.S. GDP grew at just 1.9 percent last year while the Federal Reserve was doing 85 billion a month of QE the entire time, the entire year, what is going to happen to GDP this year if the Fed withdraws that stimulus before the year is over? The numbers are going to be even lower. They are not going to be higher than they were in 2013.
